Author Interview: Era89

Posted: 12 Mar 2012 11:08 PM PDT

Meeting people in the virtual world, a fascination with text on movie posters,  being inspired with ideas for new items while watching movies, and “the imagination has no limits.” This week we meet Erasmo D’Onorio De Meo (Era89) from GraphicRiver.

If you're an Envato marketplace author and would like to be interviewed for the blog, head over to this form. We'd love to hear from you.

Tell us a bit about yourself. Where are you from, what do you do for a living?

Hello, I’m Erasmo D'Onorio De Meo, a 22 year old freelance graphic designer. I live in Gaeta, a very nice village on the west coast of Italy.

I am very sociable and I like getting to know many people, especially in the virtual world, because there are no limits of knowledge so you can meet people from all over the world. Regarding Graphic Design, my passion for this world has become a true job thanks to this wonderful marketplace.

As I mentioned earlier, I support myself with my earnings of Envato, and with some freelance jobs that I have to make every month for some sites, and for the discos of my country.

Which marketplaces do you belong to? What types of files do you sell?

I belong to GraphicRiver, but in future I would like to sell something on other marketplaces, like ThemeForest and Tuts+. I sell mostly text styles because they have always been fascinated by the text effects. From an early age the first thing I looked at on a film poster was the text. So I have a special love for this type of work.

But I also like to create other items, such as a flyers, backgrounds and lights effects. In the future I will try to sell something other than the text styles in order to show you what other things I do.

How did you get started? Have you had any formal training?

I started doing graphics exactly six years ago, thanks to my sister because she also loves this world. A passion for graphics came over me completely, and every day since then all I do is think about what to create.

I have never attended graphic design schools, and so what I do, I learned from myself. And once I discovered it, I also started learning from the site Psdtuts+.

Whenever I got into trouble with something, the first thing I would do is go to this great site and look for a tutorial that could help me. And it is thanks to Psdtuts+ I discovered the Envato marketplaces.

However, I have started to attend a private school in Graphic Design in Naples. The course lasts one year, and will help me to become a user Adobe ACE.

Describe your home workspace.

Unfortunately I live in a small house, so I do not have my own office or even my own room. I work in the living room of my house with a small desk with all the essentials that I need: a scanner, a printer, a very good PC and the accessories. Nothing special. But however I show you a picture of my workspace at my school.

Describe your creative process. What steps do you normally follow to create your files?

My sources of inspiration are music videos and movies. I always think of something new to create when watching movies.

I usually create my items with instinctive changes, and experiment on projects that have already started. If I end up with something good, I work on it and I try to make it perfect! This world has no limits because the imagination has no limits!

What is your advice to other authors regarding how to create a successful portfolio?

I honestly do not know if I can say that my portfolio is a successful portfolio. But I’m definitely satisfied with what I’m doing, so the only thing I can say to the new members of this wonderful marketplace is to engage every day in creating something unique and special.

Take inspiration from the thousands of items that can be found online, and try to improve every day.

What do you do to market your files?

I usually advertise my items on the major social networks like Twitter, Google+ and Facebook. But also other websites like PsdBucket, DeviantArt and Adobe Exchange are a great help. Especially the latter gives a lot of referrals.

What are your three favorite files, and why do you like them?

Honestly, I like all my items in the same way, but those that I prefer are these:

Movies & Games Styles Premium BUNDLE

Ultimate Photoshop Styles 2 of 2

20 Galactic Sci Fi PS Styles

Apart from yourself, who is your favorite marketplace author, and why do you like them?

My favorite authors on the marketplace are SevenStyles. His flyers are amazing. And my good friend Giallo has a good portfolio that ranges from text styles to Photoshop actions.

What do you do in your spare time?

In my free time I like going to the gym. I love bodybuilding and then I like to play video games (PES 2012 and Wii games) with my friends. But of course the first place is spending time with my girlfriend, haha.

Thanks for reading my interview and sorry for my English. Good luck to all and enjoy this great marketplace.
