Indonesia Launching Tender For 150 MW Of Solar Photovoltaics

Reposted from Solar Love: Indonesia is about to launch a tender for 150 MW of new solar photovoltaic (PV) energy. The tender is expected to be issued next month, leading to the installation of at least 150 MW of new PV plants in the sun-drenched country. The tender will last for two months. Indonesia’s Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry (ESDM) is also planning a substantial new feed-in tariff (FiT). The new FiT will reportedly be … Read More

Cloudy Days For A Washington-State Community Solar Effort

The Backbone Campaign’s community solar project was motivated by a generous production incentive offered in Washington State for solar projects installed on public property. Campaign organizer Bill Moyer and many residents of King County, WA, hoped to keep more energy dollars in the local economy by using this incentive to create a community solar project in partnership with the county government. But it wasn't smooth sailing, as Bill explains in this January interview with the … Read More

Subaru's 1st Hybrid, But Not The Greenest

Reposted from sister site Gas2: While it has garnered a well-deserved reputation as a "green" automaker, Subaru has yet to actually sell a single "green" car. But that has all changed with the introduction of the Subaru XV Crosstrek Hybrid, which debuted today at the New York International Auto Show alongside the new WRX Concept. But for a hybrid, this new Subaru isn't exactly a fuel economy king. In fact, the new hybrid setup mates … Read More

But the Volvo wagon is back in a big, beautiful way, with both a sporty R-version and a super-efficient plug-in hybrid model on its way to U.S. shores. On display at … Read More

Tesla Model S Sales Exceed Target, Tesla To Be Profitable In Q1

Tesla made a few pretty big announcements yesterday (nope, none of which are the one Elon Musk tweeted about late last week). In summary, the three announcements are that Model S sales are greater than targeted, Tesla has upgraded its Q1 outlook and hit profitability that quarter, and the 40 kWh battery pack option for the Model S is not going to happen due to low demand. For more info, here’s Tesla’s full statement (image … Read More

China Launches $16 Billion Rectification Of Beijing's Pollution Crisis

20 million people live in Beijing, a literally breathtaking city that has been contending with air quality so bad and “hazardous” that its urban dwellers and visitors have an altered ability to breathe. So, it is not surprising that pollution was one of the major issues at the current National Party Congress, where China’s new leaders were confirmed. Many Chinese believe the government has been weak, lacking regard for enforcing policies designed to protect the … Read More

Shared Renewables Could Supercharge California's Clean Energy Economy

California's clean energy economy is already America's largest, but two bills making their way through the state legislature could open access to renewables for millions of utility customers – without any subsidies. If passed, SB 43 and AB 104 would allow the 75% of California utility customers who can't install their own on-site generation to subscribe to "shared" renewable energy projects of up to 20 megawatts (MW). Advocates say a 500MW shared renewables pilot program within the state's three largest utility service territories would create 7,000 green jobs, earn $60 million in state sales tax revenue, generate $2 billion in economic activity, and voluntarily surpass the state's 33% renewable portfolio standard...

Germany Agrees: There Is A Solar-Powered Solution To Greek Debt Crisis

It was a deal that looked all but dead last year, but now Germany and Greece have formally agreed to an initiative that will enable Greece to profit from one of its most valuable natural resources: the sun. The new Germany-Greece solar power agreement calls for Germany to lend its investment dollars and its low-cost solar know-how (which we’ve been eyeballing enviously here in the U.S.) to create new green jobs in its financially strapped … Read More

Current Solar Module Efficiency Nowhere Near Its Potential, Especially Thin-Film Solar & CPV (Chart)

National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) Director Dan Arvizu recently gave a keynote speech during the 2013 International Renewable Energy Conference (part of Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week), which I was lucky enough to attend*. His speech covered a large variety of cleantech topics, and most of the points he made have been covered extensively here on CleanTechnica. However, a couple of his points stood out to me as rather interesting and relatively uncovered. Some of them are the foci of the … Read More

Community Power In The Global Community Vol. II: The Netherlands

By M├╝mtaz Derya Tarhan The Community Power Report started off 2013 with a brand new series of articles: ‘Community Power in the Global Community’. As part of this project, we are going to interview key actors from various countries to provide insight into these countries’ community-owned renewables sectors. Our first stop was Belgium, where Dirk Vansintjan from Ecopower and REScoop shed some light on to the country’s community-owned energy scene.  Our stop now is the Netherlands, … Read More

1,000-Foot-Tall Wind Turbine To Be Erected

An enormous wind turbine, dubbed the “Reisemill,” is to be erected in Hamburg, Germany. It is 1,000 feet tall, and the blades span 600 feet. The German name literally translates to “giant mill,” which suits it perfectly. The wind turbine has an electricity generation capacity of 40 MW, which means that it has a very high power-to-height ratio, and can power a whopping 13,333 homes by itself, at peak power production. It costs $48 million … Read More
