Zelectric Bug (VW Bug Turned Into An EV)

This article originally appeared on San Diego Goes Green (all images courtesy Zelectric Motors). Electric cars and VW bugs? What do they have in common and why would you want to learn more about them? It seems like the makings of the "best of both worlds here." First off, electric cars, which are triggered by an electric motor, then activated by rechargeable battery packs, have something viable to offer any potential buyer. Also, the batteries are reusable in other applications … Read More

Solar-Powered Proteins Developed That Can Filter Antibiotics And Carcinogens From Water

A solar-powered nano filter capable of filtering antibiotics and dangerous carcinogens from large bodies of water has been developed by researchers at the University of Cincinnati. The new technology is significantly more effective than the currently used filtering technologies composed of activated carbon. The filter is composed of two bacterial proteins that are able to absorb roughly 64% of the antibiotics present in surface waters, versus the 40% that is absorbed by current technology. Many … Read More

Walmart Targets Ambitious Renewable Energy, Energy Efficiency Standards By 2020

Walmart recently announced it is accelerating its target of being run on 100% renewable energy, and shaping their reputation as a leader in corporate sustainable development. At last week's Walmart Global Sustainability Milestone meeting, company President and CEO Mike Duke said the retail giant plans to get or create 7 billion kWh of annual global renewable energy by December 31, 2020. That's a 600% advance over 2010 levels. Meanwhile, Walmart expects to drop the kWh/sq. … Read More

Rajasthan Becomes Second Indian State To Cross 500 MW Solar Power Capacity

The western Indian state of Rajasthan recently became the second state to have an operational solar power capacity of over 500 MW. Last year, another western state, Gujarat, achieved this milestone with its aggressive solar power policy. Rajasthan laid the foundation for India’s National Solar Mission. The state had unveiled its solar power policy, among the first in the country, a few years ago. The state had allocated a number of solar photovoltaic and solar … Read More

Why Chevron Won't Make Bio-Gasoline For $2.18 Any Time Soon

If you think of a sustainably managed forest as one immense field of renewable oil, that goes a long way toward explaining why a global oil corporation like Chevron would team with the forest products giant Weyerhaeuser, in a venture to develop a cost-effective, sustainable biofuel from woody biomass. The venture is called Catchlight Energy, and so far the forest-to-fuel model looks promising. It’s so promising, according to a new report in Bloomberg, that Catchlight … Read More

Cargo Bikes Deliver Elderly A Breath Of Fresh Air In Copenhagen

This article originally appeared on Bikocity. Some bicycle enthusiasts in Copenhagen recently came up with a great idea — organizing bike rides in the city for the elderly, via pedicabs. The new group, called “Cykling uden alder,” or “Cycling Without Age,” is providing free bike rides around the city to the elderly, hopefully helping to improve their quality of life. Those in care homes for the elderly are often in need of outdoor activities and … Read More

Much More Clean, Renewable Energy Could Be Integrated Into Grid — No Problem

This was included in a roundup post the other day, but roundup posts don’t get enough attention, so I’m reposting it below from Solar Love. I think most of us know by now that there’s enough renewable energy potential to power the world several times over. However, the key is matching what can be generated in a specific location with what is needed in that location (with the “location” generally being a relatively large region). … Read More

Three Unequal Choices For A Local (Renewable) Energy Future

Earth Day highlights the need for a sustainable energy future, and experience suggests that there are only three meaningful choices for communities trying to increase local control of a greener energy future. But the three policies – deregulation ("customer choice"), municipal aggregation ("city choice"), and municipal utilities ("city ownership") – are not equal.  Two recent articles highlight the relative value of these policies quite clearly. The Citizens Utility Board (CUB) of Illinois, a nonprofit ratepayer … Read More
