Renault Twin'Z — 100% Electric Concept Car For The City

Editor’s Note: I have a feeling this car below wouldn’t look *exactly* like the images, but don’t think anyone will be surprised. Anyhow, this looks like quite an interesting EV concept, and my impression is that it would come in at a pretty low price. What do you think? Reposted from EV Obsession: The Twin’Z is the latest all-electric concept car from Renault and British designer Ross Lovegrove. The all-electric concept car is the fruit of their … Read More

Energy Secretary Nominee: Need Carbon Price To Double Or Triple Cost Of Dirty Energy

Reposted from Climate Progress: Tuesday is the confirmation hearing date for Energy Secretary nominee Ernest Moniz. The MIT professor will face the Senate Energy and Natural Resources committee (webcast here starts at 10 am ET). I have known Moniz for 30 years. Turns out he was my professor for advanced electromagnetism in 1982. Then I worked with him again at the Clinton Energy Department in 1997 and 1998 (his full bio is here). I think he's a fine choice for Secretary — and … Read More

For Price Of Iraq War, US Could Power Half Country With Renewables

From Le Grist (yes, I took it upon myself to change their name): Discussions of how to respond to climate change often involve Very Large Numbers — the needed investments to transition to a fully renewable energy system are in the hundreds of billions. The brain sort of shuts down when it encounters numbers like that. They are too big to fathom. The one thing that does seem true about them is that nobody's ever going to … Read More

BrightSource Energy Shelves Its 2nd CSP Plant This Year

Reposted from Solar Love: Another CSP plant bites the dust (well, it’s indefinitely shelved). This could mark a major blow to projections for US solar power installations if it never gets back on track (or is delayed for a long time), but anyone who follows this space should know that concentrated solar power (CSP) plants are greatly threatened these days — solar PV is simply much, much cheaper. However, that’s not technically the case here, … Read More

Bikes — Marketing Gold?

I’ve made my case for bikes being cleantech. Here’s a case for them being marketing gold (which I full agree with), via sister site sustainablog: Hipster Bikes: the Next Great Marketing Platform? (via sustainablog) Remember the kerfuffle over the "Citi Bike," or Citibank's sponsorship of the New York City-wide bike share system? Ever wonder why this was an issue in the first place? After all, this was just about a corporate logo on bikes… right? … Read More

World Record X-Series Solar Panels Now For Sale

Reposted from Solar Love: SunPower is the well known leader in solar module efficiency. It has raised the bar yet again with the release of some super efficient “ X-Series Solar Panels.” As I reported less than one month ago, SunPower now holds the record, and second place, and third place in solar module yield tests. Those records were for SunPower’s E-Series solar panels. Now, SunPower is selling these X-Series solar panels, which have a world record … Read More

Top EVs In Quarter 1 2013 (Tesla Is #1)

If you’re a fan of sales updates and such, I think you’ll find the below post titillating. Not only is it a wrap-up of March EV & PHEV sales numbers, but also Q1 2013 sales numbers. Enjoy! Reposted from EV Obsession: I wrote yesterday that the Nissan Leaf beat the Volt (by quite a bit) in March sales – to be specific, 2,236 to 1,478. Looking at the full quarter, however, the Volt was on top. The Volt … Read More

Obama, Elon Musk, Bloomberg, & Me On A Top 20 List

I know, I thought it was a joke at first, too. I actually received a tweet about the list on April 2, with a link to a slideshare (embedded below) and a note about me being on a list with some top automotive leaders. So, when I was looking at the list on slide 8 and saw myself on there with the likes of Obama, Steven Chu, Elon Musk, Mayor Bloomberg, Bob Lutz, and other … Read More

Nissan Rogue vs Nissan Leaf (Cost Comparisons)

Reposted from EV Obsession (with minor changes): When I asked readers for feedback on the gasmobiles most comparable to popular EVs about a month ago, we got into some interesting discussions and I got some very useful feedback. For the Nissan Leaf, it was determined that the Leaf was somewhere in between the Nissan Juke and the Nissan Rogue. So, I went ahead and ran comparisons for both of them. Following up on my Nissan Leaf … Read More

UK Solar Sees Record-Breaking Start To The Year

The UK was likely the 5th-largest solar market in 2013, according to the latest quarterly report from NPD Solarbuzz. In fact, in the first quarter, the UK snatched up about 10% of the global market. The first quarter also marked the first time the UK broke 500 MW of demand in a single quarter. This all follows a big rise in renewable energy in general in the UK in 2012. 11.3% of all UK electricity was generated … Read More

Austria Installed 230 MW Of Solar Capacity In 2012

230 megawatts (MW) of new solar energy capacity were installed by Austria in 2012. This more than doubled its total capacity, bringing it up to 415 MW. While there hasn’t been much of a push for solar energy in the country yet, there definitely appears to be growing interest. For 2013, €8 million ($10.3 million) of funding is dedicated for solar PV projects, plus another €18 ($23 million) is to be split amongst various types … Read More
