Excerpts:

Have You Ever Wanted a Flying Car? (Video)

Introducing TF-X: Terrafugia’s Vision for the Future of Personal Transportation Let's say that you're traveling on the freeway to a business meeting and your GPS tells you that the road in front of you has just become impassable. There is an alternate route available; however, it adds an hour and a half to your journey. You will miss your meeting. This could be a nightmare. It seems there is an answer being developed. It is … Read More

Solar Cell Material Created From Microwave Oven

Another fun solar science story, this one via the University of Utah: University of Utah metallurgists used an old microwave oven to produce a nanocrystal semiconductor rapidly using cheap, abundant and less toxic metals than other semiconductors. They hope it will be used for more efficient photovoltaic solar cells and LED lights, biological sensors and systems to convert waste heat to electricity. Using microwaves "is a fast way to make these particles that have a … Read More

Harvesting Electricity From Plants — Plant-Based Energy Generation

Harvesting electricity directly from the best solar power plants in the world (photosynthetic plants)? Sound too good to be true? Well it may be a possibility in the near future, thanks to new research from the University of Georgia. Researchers there have developed a way to “interrupt” photosynthesis and redirect the electrons before they are used to make sugars. If you’re wondering why this is a potentially importent discovery, it’s because photosynthetic plants function at … Read More

Solar Power Installation On Sailboat "Groovy"

A sailboat named Groovy has been equipped with a solar power system that powers the boat’s refrigerator, freezer, laptops, a 22″ TV, a stereo, and more. And this isn’t the couple’s first solar-powered mobile home. “My husband and I have been traveling full-time by sailboat and RV for the past 6 years, and we have lived entirely off of solar power in our trailer and sailboat,” Emily Fagan wrote in a message in CleanTechnica‘s Solar Energy … Read More

Growth Of Distributed Electricity Systems On Verge Of Transforming Utility System — "Real Dialogue" At Princeton

We’ve been covering this issue for awhile now. It’s a big deal. It’s nice to see the Ivy Leagues are now dedicating a bit of ink for this story, and it’s even better to see such a high-level group pulled together to discuss such an important topic in an open and practical way. Here’s a great piece originally published on the website of Princeton’s School of Engineering and Applied Science (h/t to a reader for passing … Read More

Breakthrough Renewable Energy Forecasting Coming To US Grid By 2015

The National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) is adding to its already impressive list of renewable energy innovations with a new two-year plan to develop custom forecasting systems for wind and solar generation. NCAR scientists and engineers will develop technology to predict sudden changes in wind speed, enable wind farm operators to curtail turbines before potentially damaging icy conditions, and predict the amount of energy generated by small-scale solar panel installations.
